The Olde English Bulldogge
The Olde English Bulldogge (also known as an OEB or Olde) is a recreation of the bulldoges of the past; before short-sighted selective breeding turned them into a caricature of their former selves. These are not English Bulldogs (or what the AKC labels simply Bulldogs), but healthier and more athletic dogs who are able to run, jump, breathe freely, reproduce naturally, and are less prone to most of the other problems that have become associated with bulldogs. In short, they are everything you love about bulldogs, but with fewer issues.
As much as we all love a bulldog mug (and let's face it, who doesn't), that "look" has come at a great cost to the overall health of the breed. Today a bulldog without heartbreaking (not to mention wallet-breaking) health problems has, unfortunately, become the exception not the norm. There are still a few healthy ones out there, but they are few and far between.
The OEB is an attempt to return to the bulldog's original design, with a slightly longer muzzle and more athletic build (see HISTORICAL PICTURES), while retaining the friendly nature of the more modern bulldog. They are well-suited for both active and not-so-active lifestyles. They are thoughtful, intelligent, and tend to enjoy longer lifespans than their English Bulldog counterparts.
Make no mistake though, they are bulldogs. This means they are very powerful for their size, and can be just as strong-willed and stubborn as they are loveable. Proper training is a must. Please do some research before purchasing a pup to make sure this wonderful breed is right for your lifestyle; and be prepared to do some training when you get your pup home.
